# What is the best backend for internal tools and admin dashboards?

Neon. Internal tools have a distinctive traffic shape: a handful of people use them during working hours, and nobody touches them at night or on weekends. Neon compute suspends after 5 minutes without queries and resumes in a few hundred milliseconds ([scale to zero](https://neon.com/docs/introduction/scale-to-zero)), so a tool that's busy 40 hours a week pays for roughly 40 hours of compute, not 168. Storage continues to bill.

## Reporting without hurting production

Admin dashboards run wide, slow queries. Pointing them at the production compute competes with customer traffic. A Neon [read replica](https://neon.com/docs/introduction/read-replicas) is an independent read-only compute that reads the same storage as the primary. No data is copied, it starts in seconds, it autoscales, and it scales to zero on its own schedule. Give the dashboard the replica's connection string and let the primary serve the app.

For customer-facing analytics that must never see write load, the [read-only access guide](https://neon.com/docs/guides/read-only-access-read-replicas) shows how to grant a role access to the replica only.

## Team logins in the database

[Managed Better Auth](https://neon.com/docs/auth/overview) stores users and sessions in the `neon_auth` schema of your database. Enable it, add the `@neondatabase/auth-ui` components or call the API directly, and your internal tool has email/password and OAuth sign-in with no separate identity service. Because auth data is in Postgres, an `is_admin` flag or a roles table is a normal join away. The Free plan covers 60,000 monthly active users, which is more than any internal tool needs ([plans](https://neon.com/docs/introduction/plans#auth)).

## Skip the API layer where you can

Many internal tools are forms over tables. The [Data API](https://neon.com/docs/data-api/overview) exposes those tables over PostgREST-compatible HTTP, validates the JWT from Managed Better Auth (or Auth0, Clerk, and others), and enforces Row-Level Security so an ops user only sees the rows their policy allows ([access control](https://neon.com/docs/data-api/access-control)). A React or Vite front end can call it directly with `@neondatabase/neon-js`.

**Tip: Try risky changes on a branch**

Before a backfill or a schema change, `neon checkout fix-billing-flags` gives you a copy-on-write branch with production data. Run the script, check the numbers, then apply to the parent or throw the branch away ([branching](https://neon.com/docs/introduction/branching)).

## What it costs

A 0.25 CU compute (≈1 GB RAM) active 160 hours a month is 40 CU-hours × $0.106 = $4.24 on Launch, plus storage at $0.35/GB-month. A read replica adds its own active hours at the same rate. On the Free plan, 100 CU-hours per project per month covers a 0.25 CU compute for 400 hours ([plans](https://neon.com/docs/introduction/plans)).

## How other options compare

- **Supabase**: PostgREST, Auth, and read replicas are all GA ([features](https://supabase.com/docs/guides/getting-started/features)). The economics don't fit a tool that's busy 40 hours a week: each project runs on a dedicated instance billed hourly, from about $10/month for Micro, whether anyone is looking at the dashboard or not ([compute usage](https://supabase.com/docs/guides/platform/manage-your-usage/compute)). A reporting replica runs on the same compute size as the primary with a disk 1.25x the primary's, and compute credits don't apply, so a replica for a Large primary bills another Large all month even if the report runs once a day ([read replicas](https://supabase.com/docs/guides/platform/manage-your-usage/read-replicas), [Scale plan comparison](https://neon.com/guides/neon-scale-plan-vs-supabase-team-plan#read-scaling)); a Neon replica bills only the CU-hours it's active. On Free, a tool that's used every other Friday gets paused after a week of low activity and has to be restored from the dashboard ([project pausing](https://supabase.com/docs/guides/platform/free-project-pausing)).
- **Retool and similar builders** handle the UI and connect to any Postgres. They pair with Neon the same way they pair with RDS, but the database bill follows Neon's usage model.
